In the year 1949, a group of forty ex-servicemen convened at the local village hall with a shared vision in mind. They collectively agreed to establish what is now known as the St Leonards & St Ives Ex Services Club. Each individual contributed one shilling to the cause, and the accumulated sum served as the initial capital for the club’s establishment.
The land on which the club stands was generously donated by the parents of Squadron Leader Dennis Beck. Tragically, Squadron Leader Beck was killed in action during the tumultuous times of the Second World War. His parents’ donation stands as a poignant reminder of his service and sacrifice.
The construction of the St Leonards & St Ives Club was a community effort, built by the hands of dedicated volunteers. On Easter Sunday in the year 1954, the Club was officially opened by Col. E. G. St Aubyn, who was the Chairman of the Welcome Home Fund at the time.
Over the years, the St Ives Club, as it is affectionately known to the locals, has seen numerous additions and improvements. Membership has expanded beyond ex-service personnel, welcoming a diverse range of community members. Despite this evolution, we remain committed to preserving the founding spirit of the club. We continue to support Help For Heroes and the Royal British Legion, as a testament to our enduring respect and gratitude for those who have served.
